Personal Statement for Obstetrics and Gynecology
My desire to help people coupled with a wide range of experience and interest in medicine has convinced me that a career in Obstetrics and Gynecology will not only serve to satisfy my natural propensity towards human health but also equip me with practical knowledge to help those in dire need of surgical intervention. My deep interest in Obstetrics and Gynecology began after completing my undergraduate studies in medicine and surgery, having been accepted as a medical intern in the Ministry of Health in Baghdad. It was during this time as an intern that I felt a strong urge to add a spark of hope to the numerous patients that visited the facility with various complications. However, my greatest obstacle was lack of professional experience.
Other than the deep interest in helping people, I have various reasons for pursuing a career in Obstetrics and Gynecology. The field provides a distinct integration of primary care and a surgical subspecialty. Primary care makes it possible for continuity of care resulting in the establishment of trusting, long term relationships and the delivery of comprehensive, quality care. The profession also offers the opportunity for surgical intervention if necessary in addition to medical management of patients. The profession will also give me the opportunity to provide care for individuals of all ages and participate in a dynamic field that is not only challenging intellectually but also beneficial. Even though a large part of my experience is derived from my work as a urologist, the experience I gain working with patients with urogynecological conditions such as pelvic organ prolapse and urinary incontinence, and handling cystocele repairs with mesh, TVT, transurethral collagen injections together with conducting urodynamics, has greatly cemented my interest obstetrics and gynecology.
