Essay: Treatment Options Available for Crohn’s Disease
What treatment options are available for Crohn’s disease? How do the available preparations of 5′-aminosalicylic acid derivatives differ?
It is important to note that there is no known cure for Crohn’s disease but the symptoms, which are present in a patient suffering from the said disease, can be controlled. In cases where remission is achieved chances are high that it will not stay for long. Symptoms can be controlled by the use of drugs and in some cases surgery is applied. When a patient is adequately put under, medication what happens is that his or her daily life remains the same. According to Longmore (1), treatment is maintaining the active symptoms and then going ahead to maintain remission.
Antibiotics are used to treat any infection and thus reduce inflammation that is associated with this disease. After remission is achieved treatment is aimed at maintaining this state. The drugs that are commonly used are known as aminosalicylate anti-inflammatory drugs and corticosteroids. It is imperative to note that the latter drugs have notable side effects and thus it is not recommended to be used for long periods and when they are used, immunosuppressive drugs should go hand in hand with them.
