Essay: Story of Where are you going where have you been
It can be noted that there is something unusual about Arnold that he does not like everyone to see. He is seen to be covering his eyes with sunglasses and once he takes them off, Connie sees, “how pale the skin around his eyes was, like holes that were not in shadow but instead in light. His eyes were chips of broken glass that catch the light in an amiable way” (Kennedy & Gioia 661). This shows that just like Satan, he has to achieve what he wants before declaring that he is the devil. He knows that Connie cannot withstand his satanic appearance and therefore should hide it and once he is sure that Connie cannot run from him disclose it.
Further, just like Satan, Arnold has been given supernatural powers. He knows everything about Connie. When he meets her with her friend Eddie, he knows her type and thus swears to follow her. He is aware that Connie admires herself and loves men. He thus vows just like a man to follow her although with the intention of destroying her. Again, he knows when Connie’s mother and sister are not at home and thus comes for her. The way he explains about the whereabouts of the mother and the sister is surprising, “Right now they’re-uh-they’re drinking Yeah. Sitting around. There is your sister in the blue dress, huh? —– And your mother’s helping sone fat woman with the corn, they’re cleaning the husking corn” (Kennedy & Gioia 662). He comes at the time when Connie has no one to ask for help from. These are exactly the works of the devil who knows that he can easily win someone when alone. He is aware that he could not have made it in the presence of the mother and the sister whop do not acknowledge the works of Satan.
