Essay: September 11 fire investigation
It was in the morning of September 11 2001, when two Boeings 767 hit the each tower of the World Trade Centre leading to their collapse despite the assurances that had been given about the strengths of the buildings. The fire department did investigation in their quest to ascertain the cause of the collapsing of the building. During construction, the impact of one Boeing 707 had been analyzed but to their surprise the first time it was hit, there were two planes. It is worthy noting that the impact of 707 is of higher magnitude than that of a 707 due to the differences in size and speed.
The documentation of the said analysis could not be traced which led to the questioning of the hypothesis that “such collision would result in only local damage which could not cause collapse or substantial damage to the building”. (National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Federal Building and Fire Safety Investigation of the World Trade Center Disaster (2006) available online) It is of paramount importance to note that after the attack it is possible now to conduct an analysis of a building’s capabilities of withstanding such attacks.
