Essay: The Role of the Structure of the Brain in Causing Homosexuality
We cannot ignore the significance of Dr. LeVay’s study although it has limitations. It is not possible to ascertain which came first, homosexuality or change in the structure of the brain. Environmental factors can cause changes in the structure of the brain (Johnson 55). Johnson observes, “The size and shape of the human brain is determined biologically and is impacted minutely, if at all by behavior of any kind” (54).
This shows that the people under LeVay’s study could have had different structures of brain because of the environments they were living in. This does not necessarily imply that the brain difference is the cause of their different sexual orientations (Johnson 54). The environment that one lives in and the upbringing s/he receives (nurture), plays the most significant role in the behavior of that person, which includes his or her sexuality.
