On similar lines, “David” was a life sized sculpture that was created by Bernini inItalythat is again straight out of the Old Testament. It shows David in the process of throwing the stone at Goliath which will make it go down allowing David to cut his head. It reflects the status of David as a major figure in Christian and Jewish history and even apart from that it was a unique piece of art. It is the first three dimensional sculpture of David requiring a viewer to go to all sides for new horizons.
It shows a figure in motion which was a product of a technique written about by Da Vinci and only practiced few times before. There is focus on the human body and the masculine features which became a feature of adoration in art following the Greeks. As Shakespeare’s Hamlet reflects:
“What a piece of work is a man! How noble in reason! how infinite in faculty! in form, in moving, how express and admirable! in action how like an angel! in apprehension how like a god! the beauty of the world! the paragon of animals! And yet, to me, what is this quintessence of dust? man delights not me; no, nor woman neither, though, by your smiling, you seem to say so.”
