The medical history of the patient is also important and the eating habits. This is because certain foods have been found to have high contents of calcium, oxalate and phosphate compounds, which are passed in the urine in excess. Changing in lifestyle for susceptible people is the most important step towards kidney stones prevention. Drinking more liquids, especially water is the first step towards a kidney stone free generation. One should at least drink enough water throughout the day to produce two quarts of urine in a day. This will lead to removal of excess salts through urination and therefore prevention of crystallization of solids, which eventually turn in to kidney stones.
According to the Oxalosis and Hyperoxaluria Foundation, people who are prone to forming calcium oxalate stones should try as much as possible to avoid certain types of food if their urine contains an excess of oxalate. According to their research they have come up with type of ratings from top to bottom rhubarb ,spinach, beets, Swiss chard, wheat germ, soybean crackers, peanuts, okra, chocolate, black Indian tea and sweet potatoes in that order have high levels of calcium oxalate. However, those types of food with limited amount of oxalate may be eaten in limited quantities. They include such foods like grits, grapes, celery, fruitcake, marmalade, liver, red raspberries and green pepper.
