Essay: My Old Man
In the poem, ‘my old man’, the old man’s son who lives a very stressful life having to remain drunk at his young age of sixteen narrates the story. His main theme is the abuse of power of his father who rules all but later accepts that he can be destroyed by a very minor thing (as the rich man is killed by the horse). They are different in that theme for English B brings out the idea that people are more alike than different, in the old man poem the two parents have separated and their worlds are very different.
The narrator in “my old man” is very distressed as is shown by the worries his mother has of finishing high school. The only time he is able to get close to his father is when he is praising a story he wrote about a rich man killed by his favorite horse although it had no meaning to him.
