Essay: Major prison reforms
The next major prison reforms were seen in the 1970s and 1980s where they developed the so called new generation prisons Geltner (2008). They sort to bring the idea of unit management into the building.
The idea behind this design is to divide the population into smaller groups and into housing units. This was the same time that the prison system saw the advent of technology and new ideas in management Bosworth (2002). These prisons saw the removal of the prison guard from the front lines to be replaced by CCTV. This system can monitor the cell blocks, large activity areas where it is controlled from a central room.
