In Snow Country the main protagonist, Shimamura is detached from the lives of the other people. It is of paramount importance to note that Shimamura is wealthy and so he seems not to care about the feelings of the young and innocent geisha Komako. Though she is in the relationship with all her heart, he is not fully committed. When Komako notices that, she is wasting her time with Shimamura she tries to fight the desires but to no avail. Shimamura seems to be too lonely such that he needs company a lot and he goes ahead to get fascinated by a lady known as Yoko whom he meets in a train. He spends most of his time in the mountains observing the beauty of the scenery as a way of fighting his loneliness.
Though the two protagonists are wealthy, they live a life of isolation. This shows that money does not guarantee
happiness in one’s life. The fact that Shimamura is married does not give him satisfaction in his life. Though the judges have good jobs they are not satisfied with their lives either. This is an evidence of the fact that life is how you take it.
