Essay: Main Functions of the Kidney

Sample Essay

The main function of the kidney is the removal of the excess water and wastes from the blood; each drop of blood passes through the kidney for purification. Therefore, the kidney plays an important role in the body mechanism. This is because the kidney absorbs excessive salts and hence makes sure the body cells and the surrounding environment contains same concentration of compounds. This consequently leads to internal balance conducive for the body metabolism. For example when someone consume a lot of water the kidneys excrete most of it to balance. If someone consume only little amount of water the kidney tries to retain most of the water and hence less will be excreted as urine. They produce a hormone that helps in the production of strong bones and the red blood cells. When kidney excretes excess water and other waste products, they pass through urinary system. The urinary system consists of ureter, which carry the urine to the bladder. A bladder is an oval shaped structure that stores the urine and finally the urethra, which takes urine from the bladder to the outside.
The term ‘kidney stones’, is associated with this part of the body. Nevertheless, it is important to note that stones do not necessarily occur in the kidney. Sometimes they occur in other parts in the urinary system. In fact, there are medical terms used when referring to those stones that occur in another place. For example, ‘urolithiasis’ is the term used by the medical practioners to describe or explain the stones occurring in the urinary system. Other terms mostly used are the urinary tract stones disease or nephrolithiasis.
