Essay: Korean Pop Culture

Sample Essay

According to those advocates of Hallyu faddism, in East Asian countries including China and Vietnam, there has been an increased demand for pop culture programs because of industrial development and improved living standards. The Hallyu culture has been more preferable in terms of both quality and price. In other words, “the successful penetration of Korean pop culture in the niche market is not because it has been recognized for its excellence with top-quality cultural products, but because it has fitted the demand of those countries for appropriate products in quality and price, and the Hallyu is just a phenomenon resulting from the success” (Jang 9). From this perspective, the Hallyu culture does not reflect the distinctive cultural characteristics and sentiments of Koreans, but rather “is derived where Western culture is refined for the sentiments of Eastern culture and a phenomenon of driving the advanced Western culture through them” (Baek 123).
The Koreans do not produce something that is very new in the market, but they try to infuse the western culture in what already exists as a way of improving their own products. The Chinese like this mixture because of the fact that they like a feeling of being westernized. The Chinese and the other people of the eastern Asia like to be associated with the western culture since most of them aspire to be like the Westerners.
