Essay: Intelligence Definition and Measurement
It is of paramount importance to acknowledge the fact that defining intelligence has been a dilemma to scholars whereas measuring it is more complex. Intelligence may be defined as the ability for a person to use his or her own brains as way of living in harmony and understanding of the people and things around him or her. This is because the fact that one is not bright in class does not mean that he or she is of lesser intelligence the said person might very good in another extracurricular activity. The fact that one is not good in arithmetic does not necessarily mean that he will also fail in any other subject.
The most common type of intelligence is the one that is exhibited in schools by students and at the same time teachers. There are those students who never revise since they grasp whatever that the teacher has taught them. Even though there might a high number of students in a given class, it is known that after they have been through the same lessons together, when they sit for an exam there is no way they can achieve the same marks or points. The fact a certain student scores only A’s in all the subjects he or she is taking does not mean that the average student stupid. Though grasping of the subject being taught varies from one person to the other, it is worthy noting that some factors play an important role in determining how students will perform. (Smith 2002)
