This was a period between 11th and 13th centuries in the European history. Before this period, we had the Early Middle Ages and later after this we had the Late Middle Ages. The High Middle Ages was characterized by a very fast increase in the population of Europe leading to great political and social change when compared to the preceding phase. By the year 1250, the fast increase in population was of great benefit to the economy. This was because population had been previously highly affected during the middle age because of several calamities which included the Black Death, economic stagnation and numerous wars.
From around the year 1000 onwards, the area of Western Europe had been invaded by Barbarians leading to its political organization. There were Vikings who had come to settle in Europe especially in France and British Isles. There was also a brief exception of invasions of the Mongol which led to ceasing of the Barbarians incursions. During the start of the High Middle Ages, 11th century, Alps populations began to settle in new lands especially the places in Europe which had turned into wilderness after Roman Empire ended (Godman 100). This thus led to clearing and cultivating the marshes and forests in Europe.
The high middle ages had a production of variety forms of artist, spiritual and intellectual works. Due to the professional work of this age, there were several improvements that happened in Europe. For instance, the Gothic cathedrals which are highly notable were built during this period. It was also during this era that the rise of the Western European modern states rose into power as well as the rise of the major Italian city states.
