Essay: Development of Genetically Modified Organisms
The above-mentioned problems can always be taken care during the development of GMOs. Since it is through pollen grains that genes are transferred to undesired crops, the crops should modified in a way such that they cannot produce pollen grains. It is possible to modify in a way that the pollen grains produced do not possess the foreign genes as a way of curbing cross breeding. If this were made possible, then even if monarch caterpillars eat the resultant pollen then they would not die. A buffer zone can be introduced through planting a crop of non GMOs around the GMOs field and allow pests to feed on the non GMOs field which in the end would not be harvested. This would ensure that the pests do not feed on the GMOs and thus they would not develop resistance.
From this, it is evident that GMOs are the way forward if farmers have to be producing enough food to feed the world. It is of paramount importance to note that there is no scientific prove to show that GMOs pose any health risk to the consumer so people need not worry about the consumption of the same. Denying the usage of biotechnology as a way of fighting hunger in the world is tantamount to projecting the whole population to starvation. Of importance is for scientists to make sure that they produce different varieties for the whole world since staple foods differ from one place to the other.
