Essay: Data Collection Procedure
Within the data collection procedures my research will be empirical, as I will be going out into the field to find selected individuals for my research. The data I will be collecting will be primary data. Primary data can be collecting through observations, focus groups, surveys and in-dept interviews. I have therefore chose be focusing on in- dept interviews. According to Davies (2007) he suggests that a comfortable and unthreatening environment is suggested for each interview. Therefore each off my participants will be invited to have a one on one interview with me on one occasion at a time and place of their choice.
The reason why I have chosen for the interviews to be in the participant’s time and place of their choice is because it can shape the evidence or findings that they will provide. In argument towards the location of the interview, if I was to set boundaries on the time and place it could make the participant uncomfortable and they might feel as if they could not speak about everything they wanted too as the subject is quite sensitive and can be emotionally at times. I plan to interview each participant for a minimum of twenty minutes each, however I will give them an extra ten minute leeway if it was necessary and I felt that it could help to my findings. Each interview will be audio- taped. The main reason for this is because it is a semi- structured interview, where the participant has full advantage of speaking about anything in relation to the subject. I will not be able to fully concentrate on the participant if I was to write out the whole interview word for word at the same time. Also I would like to give my full attention to the participant in order to get the best results as possible, however I will take notes, where I feel is quite vital for the research. After the interview I will then go back and transcribe the whole interview word for word and then finally I will analyse it by using a type of data analysis.
