Currently, many organizations are incorporating technologies that they do not clearly understand how the technology can cost them when used against them. There are many actions that attackers can execute when they access a firm’s database, these include:
o Diverting financial assets
o Cutting communication lines between the business partners and the employees,
o Damage a firm’s reputation
o End eCommerce
It is important to note that the computers can be employed to commit crimes and delete evidences against crimes and can also be victims of cybercrime. Globalization requires a firm to connect their systems with those of the suppliers, business partners, clients, retailer among others; however, the more they integrate the more they face diverse risks. The reason for integrating with other organizations and other people is to cut the costs of operations in efforts to embrace the business of self-service.
The cybercrime is expanding at an alarming rate, “A recent survey of Fortune 500 companies by the FBI and the Computer Security Institute found financial losses from computer crime exceeding $360 million from 1997 to 1999. Of those responding to the survey, 62 percent reported computer security breaches within the last year” (Information Security Survey, online) Such attacks are made easy since internet uses the communication protocols that were planned more than thirty years ago that could not prevent any exploitation. Despite the level of exploitation, internet security measures are being developed to address this issue.
