Essay: Children Obesity
Obesity is the accumulation of excess fat in the body. Though there is not clear definition of obesity, most professional define obesity in terms of body mass index (BMI). A person with a body mass index of more than 30 is referred to as obese. Others define obesity in reference to having a more 20% weight of a healthy child, for boys, they assume obesity to be 25% excess weight of a normal healthy boy whereas girls with excess of 32% excess weight of a normal child is considered to be obese. Obesity is a health problem that is affecting most of the children in US and other developed countries. According to the America Obesity association, 15% of the children aged between 6 and 11 years are obese and this number is continuing to rise. Obesity catalyzes a number of health problems to a child and can result to social and emotional problems. There is a high likelihood that an obese child will also be obese at adulthood. This poses many health problems to the obese adult like high chances of stroke, heart attack among others.
According to Schlosser in his book Fast Food Nation, the issue of obesity and fast food has not been categorically studied. He notes, “it seems wherever America’s fast food chains go, waistlines inevitably start expanding” (Schlosser 242). Schlosser puts it across that among the developed countries; America hosts the highest number of obese case with 25% of the children being obese while more than 50% of the adults are obese. Schlosser notes that the quantity of fast food being consumed has increased at an alarming rate while the cases of obesity have double from 1970. Schlosser further notes that there are more 50 million obese American among which 6 million are referred to as super obese. Schlosser notes that “additional 6 million are “super-obese”; they weigh about a hundred pounds more that they should. No other nation in history has gotten so fat so fast” (ibid 240). The Americans children mostly eat fast foods, eat less in their homes, do fewer exercises, eat less fiber, eat more and eat more fat eventually becoming obese.
