Essay: Child development- Speech Development and Learning
A child starts making or producing sounds at birth by crying (Griffiths, 2007, p. 60). The baby is able to progressively make other different sounds as they develop meaning that there are progressive speech development stages going on.
This goes along with the development of the vocal chords, which lead to meaningful utterances like “ma-ma” or “pa-pa” which later articulate to meaningful references to mother and dad. This is the earliest stage of learning which is equally influenced by the interaction of the environment and biological aspects. By the time the baby is one year, they are able to attempt speaking and passing a message when the informal utterances are attached to form words and phrases words. Such examples show that this is among the good displays of how the environment can influence certain biological phenomena and enhance motor neuron development.
