Essay: Ancient Pagans
Ancient pagans were allowed to do some rituals but after they were much assimilated to the Christian faith they had to abandon their practices for the last time. Even in the gospel of St. Matthew, he is believed to have been a tax collector during those times tax collectors were perceived to be immoral but he converts to Christian and is eventually raised to sainthood. The bible teaches that a woman can only marry again after the death of her first husband but that is not the case nowadays.
The missionaries had to look for ways of making the faith more accommodating and had to change some of the laws. This was changed to allow a man or woman to remarry if he or she had a divorce certificate. Initially it was a man only who would decide whether to call for a divorce or not. However, after consultations it was found out that this was discriminatory against the woman and had to be changed to allow women to call for a divorce too. The Pentateuch gave the women the highest degree of freedom for it provided documentary evidence for divorce thus allowing a woman to remain remarried even her former husband thought otherwise (Instone-Brewer 31).
