Essay: Analysis of My Papa’s Waltz
In the poem my papa’s waltz he is telling kids that they should appreciate what is been done to them by their parents. The parents are also being told that they should put efforts in their careers even if one has to drink. Having lost his father at the age of fifteen he is having fond memories of what used to happen when he was young. Kids who have a nice upbringing grow up to be people of good character and thus he encourages parents to have loving and caring relationships with their children.
In the poem a journey to the interior, he takes us through the struggles one goes through as he grows up, from a kid to adulthood. He achieves this by using imagery and metaphors when he compares growing up to a journey a person is taking. By saying that the journey is very rough at start shows how a kid sees very big problems where there are no problems at all but due to their small minds, they perceive them as such. As one grows up life becomes meaningful even though the real problems start to arise. A kid has someone to take care of his or her problems but an adult has to solve his or her problems. This is why he is saying that the road has become smoother but slippery a motif meaning something that cannot support you. (Mills 12-44)
