Essay: American presence and involvement in the Middle East region
American interests in the Middle East date back over 200 years (Michael, 2011, p. 37). They first stepped into the Arab world not for war but for missionary purposes. Pliny Fisk and Levi Parsons arrived in this vast land with an aim of knowing what hey could offer to both Muslims and the Jews, people of Palestine Egypt and Syria (Lesch & Tschirgi, 1998, p. 7).
Many more Americans followed coming along with printing equipments that they used to print books, bibles, dictionaries and many other educational publications that amounted to four million books written in Middle Eastern languages. These efforts culminated in establishment of 300 schools and a Syrian protestant college, which came to be the American university in Beirut (14).
