Essay: Alexandria Police Department-Patrol Bureau
Another important arm of the department is the patrol bureau. This is the closes arm o the police to the public. It offers traffic solutions and conducts preliminary investigations to a complex case. This bureau is tasked with ensuring immediate response to emergencies and alarms call for further reinforcements if necessary (NCIS 1999 p. 11). It operates 24 hours seven days a week with officers each being assigned a patrol base. This department is therefore on of the most active when compared to the rest. Any breakdown will result in massive losses not only in crime prevention but also in timer wastage where heavy traffic jams are witnessed (13).
From the look at the way the department operates, the most appropriate model of operation is the decentralized one (Maguire and John 2006 p.23). This is supported by the fact that services offered by the police are mostly of an emergency in nature. Therefore putting all the operational bases at a central place will limit the ability of the police to work well and in time. Access to equipments will also be a big problem, as officers will be forced to cover long distances to get them. This will only increase the expenses incurred by such operations thus disabling some of the most important working ethics (Moore and Braga 2003).
