Essay: Advantages of telecommuting to employers
Improved productivity- Studies reveal that employees are more productive when they work at home compared to working from the office. When they are working from home, there are very few distractions compared to the workplace. Time spent by employees from their home to the work place and interruption from other employees can be reduced. This time can be put to better use for the benefit of the company (Lister, 2009).
It is important that the company put plans in place to ensure that resources required by employees are also in place. This would make it expensive for the company to run all the activities.
Retention of valued personnel- Many employees are normally lost by companies when changes occur in their lives. In cases where employees are forced to relocate, it would be difficult to retain such an employee (Alison 2010). It is only through telecommuting that the employer will be able to work easily despite the distance away.
Reduction of office overheads- When people work at the comfort of their homes, the costs of running business becomes cheap. This is because every resource needs to be allocated for those who may want to work in the office. An example of the cost that could be reduced include, printing cost, and overtime cost. With very few people in the office, printing is greatly reduced. When people work from home, there will be no overtime payment made (Lister, 2009). This is because they work on the basis of targets rather than hours.
Attract quality recruits. With telecommuting policy in place; the business will attract so many people who are highly qualified. It would then be the discretion of the employer to chose the employee that they think are best qualified. This is an advantage to the firm (Haines, 2010).
